St Lucia 2

Jalousie Plantation is well spread out, adjacent to what appears to be a manmade beach. Shuttle buses take guests around it. Access is via some extremely steep gradients demanding 1st gear and a lot of concentration. In fact, the whole of the west coast demands total attention while driving with one hairpin after another! I called in the Manager’s peace offer of a hire car for the next two days. We made contact with Hugh & Tammy, who had now driven from the north end of the island to Soufriere nearby, and agreed to meet them the next for a convoy tour.

Hugh & Tammy arrived and we set off for the south and east coasts. The eastern side is flatter, but we were told is less interesting, which proved to be so. We did, however, dwell some at Vieux Fort where there was a fabulous outlook from a lighthouse and microwave hillside, with a view to St Vincent to the south. We met the keeper and chatted with him for some time after Hugh & I had studied the various microwave installations and commented on their maintenance, pleased to hear from the keeper later that C&W looked after theirs!

After lunch on the beach, we had a short drive up the east coast to prove its lack of interest; we then turned round to head for a resort that is above Jalousie with a clear view of the Pitons. At least, that was the expectation, but it was pouring on arrival! A couple of beers later the rain cleared and some photos were taken. After a cooling off in the small pool outside our villa, we enjoyed a dinner together nearby before saying goodbye to Hugh & Tammy, off to Singapore then Australia – an itinerary for the future!
