We had a trouble free journey to Antigua and our hotel, the Copper & Lumber Store in Nelson’s Dockyard, in English Harbour on the south side of the island, with lots of old brick and wooden beam. It is one of many functional buildings that comprised the dockyard facility, used for repairs to the British Navy Fleet deployed to protect British commercial interests in its Caribbean Colonies in the late 18th Century. English Harbour is a natural harbour and a safe haven from hurricanes. The buildings became dilapidated when the dockyard ceased to be used, or were damaged by hurricanes, but it has now been restored to become the island’s major tourist attraction and a major location for yachting regattas in the Caribbean. As it is off-season, we seemed to be the only people around the dockyard at first, but a few more came at the weekend, although we think we were still the only occupants of the hotel, lovely! Jean just visible in the window of our room. However, mosquitoes are in-season because of the occasional (warm) rain, preferring Jean’s more tender skin to mine, it has been quite hot at times although a strong breeze often cools, and it certainly hasn’t curtailed our enjoyment!
