Canberra 1

A short flight saw us to Canberra to be hosted by Anne & Bob, friends from way back in my Saigon days when he had been there with the Australian Army. Bob immediately went into role and very informed tour guide of this city that I think is so well laid out in many respects. First, we toured some hill tops for Jean to get a perspective on her first visit, looking down onto Anzac Parade, old and new Parliament buildings, Burley Griffin Lake and a number of other notable buildings. We toured the inside of both old and new Parliament buildings, catching the tail end of Question Time in the public gallery of the House of Representatives. Many parallels exist between the workings of the two houses, HofR and Senate, although the Federal model is more like the US system. It all seemed well designed and thought out and there was a great emphasis on education of the children as we saw many parties of school children and they have priority on tours. Australians have to vote and know more about their politics, perhaps a lesson for us?
